Syracuse has produced its share of early-round picks and NFL stars. Over the past two decades, the Orange's ability to produce productive NFL players has probably topped its ability to win NCAA games.
Ernie Davis was the first overall pick in 1962. Jim Brown was sixth in 1957. Donovan McNabb highlighted the most top-heavy draft class Syracuse has ever had, going No. 2 in 1999.
The Orange don't have any sure-fire NFL stars like those years, but the 2013 class may be the best overall draft class Syracuse has ever produced.

Using the all-time list of players provided by NFL.com, here are the other candidates for top class.
1999: Three players were chosen among the first 43, the best the Orange has ever had. Donovan McNabb leads the way at pick No. 2, while Kevin Johnson (32) and Rob Konrad (43) also went early.
1998: The Orange placed two players in the first round for the first and only time. Defensive backs Tebucky Jones (22) and Donovin Darius (25) went in the first round, while Roland Williams (4th round) was next.
1990: Do you count the supplemental draft? If you do, the Orange matched the school-record with six going in the draft. Wide receiver (and current wide receivers coach) Rob Moore was a first-round pick in the supplemental draft. Terry Wooden was taken in the second round and Rob Burnett was a steal in the fifth.
1989: One of two consecutive seasons that Syracuse set the school record with six NFL selections. Daryl Johnston (2nd round) was the highlight.
1988: The first year Syracuse ever had six players taken in the draft. Nose tackle Ted Gregory went in the first round, while wide receiver Tommy Kane was selected in the third. The Orange also had their first quarterback chosen in team history, Don McPherson in the sixth.
1962: Only one player was taken, but, man what a player! Ernie Davis was selected No. 1 overall. Teams that have traded in the past know it takes a lot of talent to move up to that top slot.
1957: Jim Brown was taken sixth overall and Jimmy Ridlon was taken in the fourth round.
Those are all the solid candidates.
In a best-case scenario for Syracuse this year, Ryan Nassib goes No. 8 to Buffalo, tying Larry Csonka as the sixth-highest selection for the Orange. Justin Pugh gets selected late in the first round, elevating two SU players into that round for the second time. Sharmarko Thomas could go in the second round, making it just the second time three SU players have gone that early. Add in Alec Lemon going late (probably) and a potential last-round draft choice of Brandon Sharpe, Deon Goggins or Marcus Sales (possible but unlikely) and you'd at least be approaching the best.
